Generator Installation & Replacement

Whole-home generators provide power for important appliances and systems in your home but can do so on a larger scale and for longer. They start automatically when the power goes out, even when you’re away from home.

They can power appliances, air conditioners, furnaces, sump pumps, and more. Fueled by propane or natural gas, they can power your home even if an outage lasts longer than expected.

Installing whole-home generators (also known as standby generators) is a complex project to be performed by knowledgeable, trained technicians for many reasons:

  • They have the tools and equipment to do the job right.
  • They’ll help you choose the right generator for your needs.
  • They can properly install related equipment like gas meters and electrical panels.
  • Professional installation protects the generator’s warranty.
  • Professionals understand the details that matter. Even minor mistakes can cause catastrophic results.

Portable generators provide a more compact solution. They can power essential appliances, like refrigerators and space heaters. Some families find portable generators’ transportability convenient for activities like camping or tailgating.

Service Professor offers a complete line of portable and standby generators designed to power your home and appliances for as long as necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should a generator be installed?

Most generator manufacturers recommend placing your equipment outdoors at least 5 feet from your windows and doors. You should always keep flammable materials far from your equipment.

Placing your generator around 65 feet from the transfer switch can minimize household noise while amplifying energy efficiency. Generators should not plug directly into an outlet or wiring, so the length of your cable will play a role in placement.

Can a generator power my entire home?

Whole-home generators are robust enough to supply power to every appliance in your home. These systems are otherwise known as standby generators. They vary in size, so you must choose your voltage according to your required capacity. Smaller standby generators can only manage a few small rooms, so it’s best to calculate the total wattage of the appliances you need to run.

A coffee maker, television, and refrigerator use only around 500 to 800 watts each. Computers, toasters, and dryers use over 1,000 watts. HVAC equipment can use up to 25,000 watts, so ask your electrician to perform a detailed load calculation.

Can a generator power my HVAC system?

A high-capacity generator can power an HVAC system, but only if your equipment’s wattage requirements exceed the generator’s capacity. A central AC unit or water heater uses up to 4,500 watts. That’s easy work for most standby generators, but not all HVAC systems are that efficient.

An electric furnace can use between 5,000 and 25,000 watts. A 14-kilowatt generator can power a four-ton air conditioner. You’ll need to ramp up that capacity for a five-ton HVAC system. Generators can provide as much as 50 kilowatts. These are the definitive whole-house generators, capable of running almost any HVAC system.

How often should I service my generator?

On average, generators need routine maintenance once a year, but, as with all things, the truth is a little more complicated. Heavy users will require more services. It’s best to do a full service, replete with fuel line checks, drainage, and connection tightening, for every 1,000 hours of operation.

Every 250 hours, you should do a minor service by changing your air filters, checking for leaks, and replenishing antifreeze. If your system is displaying minor problems, it’s best to order a repair or service straight away.
