Air Filter Basics

As a seasoned resident of West Michigan, you know first hand how the temperatures can quickly fluctuate! Our home’s heating and cooling systems work hard to keep up with the change in temperature, but they require maintenance every so often to continue running efficiently. This is especially true in the summer, when you need cool relief from the heat! Getting regular maintenance  will help to sustain high efficiency and reduce your bills in the long run.

Your air filters play a vital role in the overall functioning of your home’s heating and cooling system. They may be a small piece of the puzzle, but air filters are your ticket to a more comfortable home. How much do you really know about your air filters? Check out these frequently asked questions about HVAC filters.

Is There Just One Type Of Air Filter?

Unfortunately, air filters are not  “one size fits all.” There are several different air filters that are classified by their type and minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV- measures the ability of the filter to remove particles from the air). Air filters are scored based on a 20 point scale, the higher score indicates better efficiency. Check with your Service Professor HVAC technician to ensure the filter you are using is the best fit.

How Often Do I Need To Change Air Filters?

The life of your air filter will be heavily reliant on the type of filter you have installed and conditions within and around your home. Having pets, smoking, leaving the windows open, children, high or low humidity, and climate will all affect how often you’ll need to change your air filter. If you find that many of these conditions align with you, you will probably need to change your filter more regularly. The best way to make sure you are changing your air filter on time is to be proactive and regularly check it. Schedule it in your phone, or put a note on the refrigerator as a reminder!

Why do I need to Change Air Filters?

If you could see all the particles and dust mites floating around in the air you breathe, this would be a no brainer! But you can’t, so here are some shocking statistics:

  1.   The average person spends 90% of your time indoors.
  2.   The average adult takes between 17,280 and 23,040 breaths a day.
  3.   Indoor air quality is 2-5x more polluted than outdoor air.
  4.   Breathe clean air!
