Could You Benefit From A Humidifier This Winter?

Suffering from dryness?

A simple humidifier in your home could be just the thing you need! As the winter months grow nearer our bodies can start to suffer as the humid summer months fade away and winter slowly starts to take hold. A humidifier in your bedroom or common areas of your home could alleviate symptoms you’ve grown used to.

When the moisture in the air dips lower you could start to experience dry skin, nose bleeds, dry eyes, snoring, nasal congestion, throat irritation, and more. Air humidity should be between 30% and 50%, but not higher. Humidity levels above 50% could lead to the growth of bacteria and mold within your home.

There are different types of humidifier that could be more beneficial depending on what your body needs! Your pharmacist will be able to help you select a humidifier that would work best for you.

1. Vaporizer (Hot Steam Humidifiers):

Breaks up the water into tiny particles that can be inhaled. This uses electricity to power a heating element. It boils water and creates steam. The steam cools down before it leaves the machine, enters the air, and reaches the body.

Best for: Warm mist humidifiers are better for reducing bacteria and germs, and can achieve higher levels of moisture saturation. They can also be used with some medicated products for improved cough relief. Since warm mist humidifiers operate without an internal fan, they tend to be quieter than their cool mist counterparts.

2. Cool Mist Humidifier:

Uses an internal wick filter to absorb water while a fan blows the air through the filter. This process causes the water to evaporate throughout your room as an ultra-fine, invisible mist.

Best for: Cool mist is a better choice for homes with children and pets while warm mist models are a little quieter and can help you feel slightly warmer in the winter.

3. Ultrasonic Humidifier:

Uses a ceramic diaphragm vibrating at an ultrasonic frequency to create water droplets that silently exit the humidifier in the form of cool fog. Usually the mist gets forced out by a tiny fan. The models without fans are meant mainly for personal use.

Best for: Hydrating the air without creating any heat in the air or moisture.  Ultrasonic Humidifiers can lessen the effects of infections and lessen skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
